Remember those New Year Resolutions from January? How are they going for you?
Well in this episode, we’re going to have a super simple 6 month review to help you see where you are now, where you want to be in 6 months time, and how to make that happen.
Aah, how the sands of time wizz by. I looked away for a second, and bam! 6 months had passed!
So here we are and I truly cannot believe it’s already July.
Where did the time go? (serious question, btw.)
I had the best intentions. I was going to write a new course, and … well, never mind. All I can say is for me, it’s been a tricky year personally.
My dad died. He went into hospital Christmas Eve and died 7th January. I talk more about this in ‘How to navigate a crisis in your private practice’.
And it’s been very complex to say the least. We had a complicated relationship, I won’t bore you with the details, but he’s thrown me and my brother quite the curveball which we are trying to navigate.
And I have something else significant that I’m trying to manage in my personal life that’s extremely difficult too. My brain has been in a fog for the majority of the year.
So yes, not the best year so far.
What has your year been like so far? Has it all gone the way you planned, or have you had something more like a plot line in a soap opera like mine?
Oh, to hell with the first half of 2023, right?
If you’re like me and wondering where Jan-June went, I want to send you a virtual hug
But now let’s get out of this pity party and on to better things for July-December. After all, we DO have some things to look forward to.
Plan something fun for yourself
After 2 trips away in 2 weeks, I’ve already booked a week away with a friend in September.
This is significant as I found an old holiday pass when I cleaned out a handbag and it turns out the last proper holiday I went on was 2011 - and Dad came with us so I am totally overdue a proper break. And boy, do I need one.
How about you?
If you don’t have anything planned, consider it now and get something organised. If you get it in your diary now, you’ll keep that time free and have something to look forward to - double whammy!
If you have the budget, take a holiday. If your bank balance is a little lacking, arrange to visit friends for a few days, or go camping, or plan days out. Or just plan time off to binge-watch Schitts Creek at home.
Just get it planned and in your diary, or it won't happen.
Have you let something slip?
After dad died, I reduced the podcast and blog from weekly to fortnightly in order to make things a little easier for me to get through a tricky time.
But I’ve now decided to go back to producing it weekly again. So you can expect weekly thoughts, tips and advice for YOU. Remember to subscribe to The Grow Your Private Practice Show and you’ll never miss an episode.
Is there something you always used to do that has fallen by the wayside? Now is the perfect time to get started again.
Start something new in your practice
I’ve just noticed that on 8th July The Grow Your Private Practice Show podcast has it’s 2nd anniversary! Hard to believe that it’s been going so long.
I started by telling myself I’d try it for 12 weeks and if I didn't like it, I’d stop!
This is what I recommend to my members - when you start something new, throw yourself into it for a good amount of time. 12 weeks is perfect as it gives you the chance to give it a really good go.
Then after 12 weeks is up, you can review whether you want to carry it on, make changes or ditch it and try something different.
So what do you want to focus on?
Actually, on 13th July 2023 it’s the Q3 Quarterly Action Plan workshop in the membership, so if you have a to-do list a mile long and don’t know where to even start, come and join us. And if you’re reading this after that date, the replay will be available for you to catch up with.
Because you’re not alone with this. You don’t have to struggle to work out how where to start, or how all the pieces work together... and thank God, because it can feel so overwhelming!
The Grow Your Private Practice membership is a community of therapists all working on growing their practice. And I help, both with prerecorded courses and live events. You will always have a place to get questions answered, to support and be supported.
In fact, here’s what's happening in July:
Quarterly action plan
Where we plan what to focus on for the next 12 weeks. You choose a Main project, a Secondary project and a Personal project which really helps you concentrate your attention and that reduced that feeling of overwhelm.
There's the third of a blog series of workshops called How to Generate Blog Post Ideas to Attract More Clients
In part 1 looked at the importance of understanding 'The client's journey into therapy', and what content to produce for each of the stages. Actually I have a free download for you all about the clients journey into therapy and you can grab it HERE
Part 2 of this series looked at Alleviating Clients Fears - so important, as most clients have fears and doubts about accessing therapy.
This workshop was based on the Therapy Rebrand survey I did a few years ago, and the findings are as important to know now as they were there - again, the webinar is available for free, and you’ll find it at HERE
So this is the third of the series and I’ll be sharing How to Save Time Blogging Using ChatGPT. So if you’ve heard of Chat GPT but don’t how it can help you, this will be a great workshop for you.
And to close the month off, it’s the regular Pick My Brain call, where members get their questions answered.
Come and join us, and see what you think.
And there’s no risk. If you join and decide it's not for you, just email me within 14 days and I’ll refund you, no quibble.
Your 6-month review
6 months into the year is a great chance to stop and take stock of what's happening in your business. I highly recommend taking regular reviews, because if you don’t stop to focus, you run the risk of dabbling in this and that and not taking the steps you need to really move the needle forward in your practice.
And if you want success - whether that’s a regular 5 clients a week, or to be full-time, or you want to diversify, then you have to take considered steps to work towards it. Because it won't just happen.
Questions for reflection
- Where are you with your practice?
- Where do you want to be?
- What can you drop, and what can you now pick up?
- Where do you need support, and what can you say no to?
- What is your current priority, and what steps do you need to take to achieve that?
- What do you need on a personal level - some time off, to increase your prices, to get help like a VA or a cleaner
As I say, inspiration without action is merely entertainment, so here is your action step for this episode:
Take yourself somewhere - a coffee shop, pub, park, library etc - anywhere you can stop and think, and focus on you and your practice. Consider the questions above, and decide what to focus on in Q3.
And just before I go, I want to give you the heads up, because i have something special coming up for you.
Starting next week is a 3 part mini series all about how to attract your dream clients, and I know you’ll find it really useful - and it might not be what you think. So that will be a good boost for the start of the second half of the year.
